The club was founded in the early 80’s by a  group of business men intent on relaxation on a Sunday morning prior to a well earned drink in the local hostelry.

That particular watering hole was the Plough Inn at Kibblesworth (a mining village on the outskirts of Gateshead) – hence the original name of The Plough Gun Club.
As the membership grew the club moved to a farm at Beamish near the Open Air Museum and the name was changed to Beamish Sporting Club.

Several happy years were spent there until another move found the club on the outskirts of Tanfield, a village near Stanley, County Durham. However, due to the sale of the farm, another move was forced upon the club.

Because the membership had steadily grown over the years it was decided that if two separate grounds could be found we could shoot every week. At that time we did acquire two shooting grounds, but unfortunately one of these has since been sold.

This brings us to the present day when a morning’s shooting can be enjoyed at our ground at Winnow’s Hill near Slaley, on the borders of Northumberland and Durham.
